Program Profile
The SMARTSEA project, funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme, aims to develop an interactive Master’s in Science (MSc) program on Maritime and Surveyor IoT systems, which helps complete the market void in technical and maintenance specialists generated by the prompt expansion of the Smart Maritime & Surveying industry.
The SMARTSEA consortium brings together a range of partners, from different nationalities and organisational types, who can contribute significantly to meeting the project objectives. The consortium consists of six universities, one research centre, two small and medium enterprises and three environmental surveying and shipping companies. Partners will present the most recent knowledge and technology on Maritime Engineering, Shipping/Environmental Surveying and IoT systems on the component and systems level. The educational institutions hold facilities equipped with instrumentation for testing and development of the IoT systems. Additionally, the SMEs and shipping/environmental surveying companies constitute the industrial part of the project, bringing appropriate experience and techniques.
The work breakdown structure defined to meet the main technological and educational challenges and objectives is based on six work packages, going forward through the main challenging tasks from definition of specifications towards creating the educational materials, course deployment, student exchange and industrial placement.
The SMARTSEA expected results can be summarized as follows:
- Train engineers in the skills and knowledge they need to work in the maritime/surveying industry of the future
- Become an integral part of other academic institutions and maritime academies portfolio
- Build sustained collaboration between students, industrial partners, academics & market business roles and scientific community stakeholders
- Provide opportunities for entrepreneurship
The areas that can have major impact due to SMARTSEA project results are:
- Maritime and surveying industry
- Transportation and logistics sector
SMARTSEA mission is to educate the students in order to ensure that future graduates will be able to use the acquired knowledge in their future work within the maritime and surveying industry.
